The government has earmarked GH¢220 million to aid the relief phase for communities impacted by the Akosombo spillage and floods in the Oti, Savannah, and Bono-East Regions.
Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta announced this during the presentation of the government’s Budget Statement and Economic Policy for the 2024 Financial Year in Parliament on Wednesday, November 15, 2023.
Ofori-Atta highlighted, “Mr. Speaker, Government has budgeted an amount of GH¢220 million to support the relief phase for the communities affected by the Akosombo spillage as well as floods upstream in the Oti, Savannah, and Bono-East Regions.”
He further stated that, for the restoration phase, the government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, would allocate additional resources to aid in restoring livelihoods.
Additionally, funding has been sought from the World Bank under the IDA Crisis Response Window (CRW) to assist in the resettlement of victims, restoring livelihoods, compensating, and reconstructing infrastructure in the affected communities.
Ofori-Atta expressed relief that no lives were lost during the flooding incident caused by the Akosombo dam spillage.
He conveyed the government’s gratitude to individuals and groups that have shown empathy and support to the affected families, emphasizing the importance of continued gratitude to avoid any loss of life due to the devastating spillage from the Akosombo Dam.
