Cedi Appreciation: Government Urged To Ensure Reduction In The Cost of Goods

The Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annor Dompreh is urging the government to take steps in restoring the prices of goods and services to sustainable levels.

He contends that despite the appreciation of the cedi against the dollar in recent times, prices of food items and other goods remain high.

The Majority Chief Whip on the floor of Parliament says, government must deal with the concerns as a matter of urgency.

He said, “The cedi was down against the dollar from its initial position early this year. Presently it has strengthened more than 23 percent since the start of December at the latest IMF visit.

I crave your indulgence to raise this matter of public concern has shown its way in many of our debates these past few weeks.
This relates to the prevailing high cost of goods that is mainly from the depreciation of the cedi in the past three months.

The concern also is that while we are experiencing a turnaround, from the depreciation, the expected economic relief is not being felt by the ordinary Ghanaian since goods are being sold at high prices.”
