Energy Minister Outlines Steps To Obtain Clean Energy

The Minister for Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has emphasized steps in the energy transition framework document that will help Ghana obtain clean energy fuel and strike a balance between the usage of clean energy sources and hydrocarbons by 2070.

Speaking at the maiden University of Ghana Public lecture held in Accra on the topic “Energy Transitions: Reflections on the state of Ghana’s Oil and Gas Industry,” he mentioned that the present discussion about climate change has intensified the pressure to switch from fossil fuels to cleaner energy sources, which could have ramifications for Ghana’s emerging oil and gas sector.

According to him, out of around 20 sub-sectors, the oil and gas sector contributed an average of 4.5% to Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), between 2013 and 2021.

In 2021 also, domestic gas formed about 85% of Ghana’s gas demand for power generation.

The Minister also mentioned the bilateral partnerships the government has with other nations to guarantee Ghana produces clean fuels effectively.
