At the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, September 3, 2023, Arsenal outscored Manchester United twice in extra time to secure an exciting victory.

Marcus Rashford cut inside and blasted an accurate right-footed shot past Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in the 27th minute to give United the lead. Christian Eriksen’s brilliant pass set him up.

The Gunners were level immediately when captain Martin Odegaard was given too much space and sent an emphatic finish into the bottom corner after the struggling Kai Havertz had already missed a golden opportunity to score when the goal was at his disposal.

Arsenal, who had a penalty overturned by the VAR after referee Anthony Taylor initially determined Havertz had been fouled, missed a glorious late opportunity when Bukayo Saka shot straight at Andre Onana in a game that rarely reached the heights despite much effort.

With two minutes remaining, United’s celebrations were cut short when substitute Garnacho raced clear to score, but the VAR disallowed the goal, allowing Arsenal to deliver two devastating blows.

Alejandro Garnacho’s 88th-minute goal was disallowed for offside by the video assistant referee in a chaotic finish to a largely scrappy game, giving Manchester United the illusion that they had snatched three points.

Eight additional minutes later, the drama shifted to the other end as Declan Rice’s deflected shot gave Arsenal the lead before substitute Gabriel Jesus broke free to seal the victory and send the stadium into a frenzy.
