Speaker Alban Bagbin calls for unity and acceptance of 2024 election results
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has urged political stakeholders and citizens to accept the results of the 2024 general elections with humility, stressing the importance of unity and development in the nation.
His comments followed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) securing a decisive victory, with former President John Dramani Mahama regaining the presidency and the party gaining a strong parliamentary majority.
Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, suffered a significant defeat, losing both the presidency and several parliamentary seats.
In his Christmas and New Year address to the public, Speaker Bagbin reflected on the challenges faced by the country, including those in governance, the economy, and the democratic process.
He expressed hope that these difficulties would provide valuable lessons for improving governance in 2025.
He emphasized the need for national unity, calling on all Ghanaians to collaborate for the country’s progress.
“I am happy that God has intervened in what was a very difficult election for us. None of us anticipated this outcome, but as God would have it, it has happened. My appeal to everyone is to accept the results with humility,” Bagbin said.
He further stressed that for the country to move forward, it was crucial to reflect on what went right and wrong, both individually and collectively, and to work together for national development.
“Without unity, we will live in silos, divided by tribes, leading to hatred and conflict. It is vital for us to come together, continue to engage in dialogue, and resolve our differences through peaceful means and the rule of law,” he concluded.
