The NLC scheduled to meet with the leadership of CETAG regarding the ongoing strike

The National Labour Commission (NLC) and the leadership of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) are expected to meet in response to CETAG’s ongoing strike.

CETAG initiated the strike on August 1 due to the government’s failure to enact the agreed-upon terms outlined in their conditions of service.

Despite the NLC’s repeated pleas for CETAG to halt the strike, the association remains resolute in their stance.

CETAG asserts that its members will only resume their duties if the government demonstrates a genuine commitment to addressing their demands. Meanwhile, the NLC has warned that it will resort to legal measures if CETAG persists with the strike.

Since May 2, 2023, CETAG members across all 46 training colleges have maintained the strike, attributing it to the government’s lack of adherence to the NLC’s Arbitral Award Orders and the terms of service established through negotiations.

Despite numerous notifications sent to the Ministry of Finance, the negotiated agreements have not been put into effect, prolonging the impasse.

In an interview, Ofosu Asamoah, the Executive Secretary of the NLC, disclosed that the commission is prepared to take legal action if the strike continues. The intention behind this legal action is to encourage CETAG members to resume their teaching responsibilities. Additionally, the government may consider withholding salaries of the association’s members in the event of an ongoing strike.

However, CETAG has conveyed that its members will persist with the strike, even if it results in reductions to their salaries.

Prince Obeng Himah, President of CETAG, remarked that they wouldn’t be caught off guard if the government opted to implement salary cuts during the strike duration.
