Kirk Franklin criticizes the weaponization of marriage and sexuality in Christianity
Renowned American gospel artist Kirk Franklin has voiced his concerns about certain Christian beliefs, which he claims have strayed from the true essence of the faith.
During a recent appearance on Cam Newton’s “Funky Friday” show, the 54-year-old musician criticized how concepts like marriage, giving, and sexuality have been “weaponized” within Western Christianity.
Franklin argued that marriage has been misrepresented as a tool to judge and pressure single individuals, particularly in Christian circles. He condemned the notion that marriage is a solution to sin, a perspective he firmly rejects.
“Marriage, giving, and sexuality have been weaponized in Western Christianity… There’s this belief that if you’re living in sin, you need to get married, without understanding that marriage doesn’t fix sin,” Franklin stated.
He also shed light on the societal pressures faced by single women, especially Black women, who are often scrutinized for their marital status during family gatherings. Franklin expressed concern that being unmarried or childless is often viewed as a flaw within these communities.
While acknowledging that marriage is a good thing, Franklin emphasized that the Christian community has overemphasized its importance, often at the expense of recognizing the value of singleness in serving God. He referenced Apostle Paul’s teachings, noting that some individuals might be more effective in their ministry if they remain single.
“People rush into marriage thinking they’re fulfilling God’s will, but they’re really just following man’s dogma,” Franklin added. “You can be single and be used by God. Being married is not a prerequisite for God’s hand on your life, but we’ve weaponized it.”
Kirk Franklin’s comments have sparked discussions on how the Christian community approaches marriage and the pressures placed on single individuals within the faith.
