Evans Nimako, the Director of Election for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stated that the NPP’s defeat in the Assin North by-election does not indicate a rejection by the people. He emphasized that the results of this by-election cannot be used to predict the outcome of the general elections in 2024.

Speaking on the Sunrise show on 3FM, Mr. Nimako explained that retaining their seat in the by-election does not signify a rejection of the NPP. He expressed confidence in the NPP’s ability to secure victory in the 2024 elections based on their significant support base.

Following the by-election, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo encouraged members of his party to remain optimistic, acknowledging that democracy involves both winners and losers, and that there will always be another opportunity to contest. In a statement, he commended Ghana’s strengthened democratic credentials as a result of the peaceful and credible conduct of the Assin North by-election.

The President extended congratulations to the Electoral Commission, security services, and the media for their contributions to the successful electoral process. He also congratulated the National Democratic Congress on their victory and expressed his party’s determination to reclaim the Assin North seat in the future.

During the by-election, Mr. Gyakye Quayson emerged victorious, defeating Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) to regain the seat. The margin of his victory in comparison to the 2020 results was over 1,300 votes.

In the previous election, Mr. Gyakye Quayson secured 17,498 votes, surpassing NPP’s Abena Durowaa Mensah, who received 14,193 votes. As a result of a Supreme Court judgment invalidating his 2020 election, Mr. Gyakye Quayson will now return to Parliament to occupy the Assin North seat.
