Takoradi Technical University launches 70th anniversary celebration

In a vibrant celebration of seven decades of educational prowess and forward-thinking initiatives, Takoradi Technical University (TTU) has officially launched its 70th-anniversary celebration in Takoradi.

The occasion served as a testament to the remarkable achievements and enduring legacy of the technical university, while also laying the groundwork for future strategic endeavors.

Under the overarching theme of “70 years of Societal Relevance: Projecting Excellence and Innovation in Technical and Vocational Education and Training”, the Takoradi Technical University is set to embark on a dynamic and engaging six-month-long series of activities.

These events, ranging from alumni homecoming to thought-provoking seminars, spirited inter-faculty games, among others, are meticulously designed to highlight the university’s inclusive ethos and multifaceted contributions to society.

Beacon of Excellence

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, said the University had, over the past seven decades, distinguished itself as a beacon of excellence, a hub of innovation, and a driving force for change in the field of Technical and Vocational Education and Training.

“As we commemorate this momentous anniversary, let us come together and actively participate in all activities to make this anniversary a true reflection of who we are as a community. Looking ahead to the future, let us reaffirm our commitment to excellence and innovation, pushing boundaries, embracing new technologies, and adapting to the changing needs of our students and the workforce. Let us strive to inspire the next generation of leaders and innovators, and to shape a brighter, more prosperous future for all”, he added.

Madam Felicia Agyeibia Okai, standing in for the Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, at Takoradi Technical University’s 70th-anniversary launch, praised the institution’s remarkable journey in her speech. Recognizing the significance of seven decades in academia, she lauded the university’s enduring contributions to technical and vocational education and training.

Addressing the gathered audience, particularly alumni, she called for collective efforts to support government initiatives in providing essential infrastructure. Stressing the need for well-equipped classrooms, libraries, laboratories, workshops, and recreational spaces, she underscored the importance of creating an enabling environment for students to excel globally.

“Seventy years in the life of an academic institution is not a mean achievement. The significance of this occasion lies not only in the years of the existence but in the valuable contributions the university has made in the provisions of Technical and vocational education and training. For a period of 7 decades, the institution has natured a countless minds by empowering them with knowledge, skills, and fashioned characters as encapsulate in your motto: “Adwen, Akoma, na nsa mma mpuntu”.”

“As you celebrate 70 years of existence, I will like to call on all gathered here, especially the alumni to contribute their quota to argument the effort of the government in the provision of infrastructure to create an enabling environment for the use of the university. We have a responsibility to ensure that the students have access to a well-equipped classrooms, libraries, laboratories, workshops and recreational spaces to enable them compete with their counterparts across the globe.” Paraphrase this into a short story.

Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi advocates for Innovation in Education at TTU

Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi, Omanhene of Abease traditional area, who was the Chairman of the event, highlighted the need for educational innovation in his address. He emphasized that traditional education methods are no longer adequate to prepare individuals for the challenges and opportunities of the modern world.He stressed the importance of TTU and other educational institutions adapting and tailoring their programs to meet the evolving demands of today’s rapidly changing job market.

“Traditional education modules are not longer suffiecient in preparing indiviuals towards challenges and opportunities of the modern world. To bridge this gap, educational institution particularly TTU must innovate and tailor its programs to meet the demands of today’s rapidly changing job market. Furthermore, fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship is paramount in preparing the youth towards success in today’s market.”

In his keynote address at the Takoradi Technical University’s anniversary celebration, Seth Kwame Acheampong, Eastern Regional Minister and a proud alumnus, lauded the institution’s rich history of providing top-notch technical education and practical training. He emphasized the pivotal role TTU has played in shaping a skilled workforce that has significantly contributed to the nation’s development.

“This Institution has a rich history of providing quality technical education and practical training to students, which has helped in producing a skilled workforce that has contributed significantly to the development of the Republic. Mr. Chairman, since its Polytechnic day till date, TTU has been at the forefront of promoting technological innovation and industrial growth in the Western Region (and Ghana by biological extension), with its graduates playing key roles in various industries such as oil and gas, manufacturing, construction, arts, hospitality, entrepreneurship, and telecommunications. It has a strong legacy of producing graduates who are highly sought after by employers due to their technical skills, expertise, and problem-solving abilities.”

“Additionally, Mr. Chairman, TTU must continue to work tirelessly to promote hands-on learning through practical training and internships, allowing students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings. This practical experience is invaluable in helping students develop the problem-solving and critical thinking skills needed to succeed in today’s dynamic and fast-paced work environment. Ladies and gentlemen, this is what has made TTU what it is today; and we must continue to hold the practice in the highest esteem. Furthermore, TTU must continue to offer a supportive learning environment with state-of-the-art facilities and experienced faculty members who are experts in their respective fields. This shall ensure that students receive high-quality education that prepares them for successful careers in technical fields.”

“I humbly admonish Management, Staff, Students, Alumni, and all stakeholders of the University to do everything within their power to ensure that in the next 70 years, TTU shall remain a leading institution for technical and vocational education in Ghana and beyond. The University must expand its programme offerings, to meet the evolving needs of industry and society”, he added.
