Stabbing spree in Illinois leaves four dead and five injured

Four individuals have lost their lives, and at least five others have been wounded after a knife-wielding man went on a violent spree in the state of Illinois, USA.

The incidents transpired following a home invasion in Rockford on Wednesday afternoon, with one of the injured individuals listed in critical condition.

The victims include a 15-year-old girl, a 63-year-old woman, a 49-year-old man, and a 22-year-old man. A 22-year-old suspect has been apprehended and is undergoing questioning by law enforcement.

The motive behind the attacks remains unclear, according to the police.

The home invasion initially occurred on Florence Street, but the assailant carried out attacks at multiple locations, as per police reports.

Winnebago Country Sheriff Gary Caruana stated that a young woman sustained stab wounds to her hands and face while attempting to flee from the suspect.

She is currently hospitalized and receiving medical care.

Another man, described as a “good Samaritan” by Sheriff Caruana, also sustained stab wounds when he tried to intervene and assist the fleeing woman.

Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd mentioned that although not all victims were stabbed, none sustained gunshot wounds. Authorities believe there are no other suspects involved.

Expressing condolences, Chief Redd stated, “Words can’t even express my thoughts right now… My heart goes out to the families right now who are suffering a loss.”

Ruth Gallagher, a resident of Rockford, shared her grief over the loss of her long-time postman in the incident, confirmed by the US Postal Service.

She described him as kind and always willing to help, expressing devastation for the community.

Rockford city mayor Tom McNamara acknowledged the tragic event, expressing sorrow for the victims’ families and the community.

He emphasized resilience, stating that despite challenges, Rockford would emerge stronger.

Additionally, he announced free counseling services available at Flinn Middle School to support those affected by the tragedy.
