Deputy Director General for TVET endorses smart tablets for senior high school students

At the launch of the Ghana Smart School Project’ initiative on Monday, March 25, 2024, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo revealed plans to distribute Smart Tablets to 1.3 million Senior High School students nationwide.

The initiative is to equip the students with essential technological skills, aligning with the government’s commitment to advancing education through technology.

The Deputy Director General for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), David Prah, shared his views on the initiative in an interview on Spice FM, stating that the devices will serve as a learning management system for students.

He emphasized the inclusion of past questions and learning materials on the smart tablets, along with tracking devices for security purposes.

Mr. Prah further stated that the tablets can be used for both online and offline research and activities, dismissing concerns about reduced face to face learning opportunities.

“We have designed it in search a way that it can be on and offline with the supporting SIM card and operating on Android clock operating system. The tablet has been built with preloaded offline textbooks, lesson note, past questions and other research materials. With this it can help the student to know the systematic presenting of learning step by step”, he stated.

Mr. Prah assured that students would receive an orientation from trained teachers.

He also praised Ghanaian teachers for their role in motivating the project, stating their knowledge and adaptability for improving this project. 

Mr. Prah stressed that the tablets restrict access to unauthorized content such as pornographic or violent sites, ensuring students’ safety and focusing on maximizing the devices’ educational utility.

“Ghanaian teacher is versatile and knowledgeable so we believe that they are so motivated to implement the project. The students have been restricted to some unapproved sites like pornography sites, violent sites and the likes. These sites have all been blocked so the student can’t access them. The tablets will only allow you to educational sites.”
