The Bank of Ghana has restated its dedication to combating the presence of counterfeit currency, emphasizing its strides towards establishing a counterfeit-free environment.

Possession and distribution of counterfeit banknotes are subject to legal repercussions.

During a press briefing held as part of Ghana Heritage Month, while touring the currency processing center, Dominic Owusu, Head of the Currency Management Department, urged the public to familiarize themselves with the security features of banknotes to assist in achieving the goal of eliminating counterfeit currency.

Owusu stated, “In Ghana, counterfeit has never become a problem. The international threshold is 100 pieces per million banknotes, and we are far below that, as we are around 7 banknotes per million,”

He continued, “Despite that, what we want to encourage the public to be aware of the security features on these notes.”

Furthermore, Owusu stressed the importance of responsible handling of banknotes in transactions to uphold the integrity and trust associated with the Ghanaian cedi.

“The fact is that, for every country, the banknote becomes the business card of the citizens. The image of the country rests on the quality of the banknotes in circulation,” he stressed.

Owusu elaborated that well-maintained currency not only fosters national pride but also contributes to the promotion of tourism.

“And one interesting thing is that clean banknotes also promote tourism,” he added.
