A massive gas explosion in Nairobi, Kenya, resulted in the tragic loss of at least three lives and left nearly 300 people injured.

The incident occurred in the Embakasi district late at night, with a government spokesperson describing it as a lorry carrying gas exploding, causing a devastating fireball.

Homes, businesses, and vehicles were severely damaged, with footage showing a fierce blaze near residential buildings.

The government has cordoned off the area and launched an investigation into the explosion’s cause.

Initially, officials believed it happened at a gas plant, but later clarified that it was a truck explosion in the plant’s parking yard.

While the fire has been contained, there are concerns about the possibility of more casualties.

The Kenya Red Cross has initiated a search and rescue operation to locate any missing individuals or those who may have taken refuge elsewhere.

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority revealed that the gas plant was operating illegally, having rejected multiple construction permit applications for a storage and filling facility at the site.

The aftermath of the blast caused widespread destruction, damaging vehicles, commercial properties, and residential homes.

Witnesses reported feeling tremors following the explosion, with many sustaining injuries, including inhalation injuries and burns, with children among the victims.

Residents recounted harrowing experiences, such as Boniface Sifuna, who narrowly escaped being engulfed by flames from an exploding gas canister.

James Ngoge, a nearby resident, described the explosion as feeling like an earthquake and recounted the destruction it caused to his business.

Government spokesperson Mr. Mwaura emphasized the need for people to stay away from the cordoned area to facilitate ongoing rescue operations, with a command center established to coordinate efforts.
