and

A traditional ruler, Segun Aremu, also known as the Olukoro of Koro, was fatally shot, and his wife along with another individual were kidnapped by armed assailants in south-western Nigeria.

The attack occurred at Aremu’s palace on Thursday night.

The identity of the gunmen and whether they have made ransom demands remains unclear.

This incident follows calls for a state of emergency in response to escalating violence.

Over 1,800 abductions have occurred since President Bola Tinubu assumed office last May, prompting 50 civil society groups to urge for urgent action.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq denounced the killing, pledging to apprehend the perpetrators. Police have launched a manhunt in response.

In recent events, kidnappers abducted five schoolchildren and four teachers in Ekiti state, demanding a ransom of 100 million naira.

Additionally, a senior government official was kidnapped in Abuja, near where six sisters were abducted last month, resulting in the death of one due to delayed ransom payment.

Elsewhere, two girls were kidnapped in Kubwa, Abuja, with a ransom demand of approximately $25,000.

The surge in kidnapping for ransom has become increasingly prevalent in Nigeria, with armed gangs targeting various demographics, including road travelers, students, and residents in both rural and urban areas.
