Ghana Meteo advises motorists to slow down due to worsening harmattan

Ghana

The Ghana Meteorological Agency has issued a warning to motorists, urging them to exercise caution during the harmattan season.

Joseph Portuphy, the Head of Forecasting at the Agency, has indicated that the country has not yet experienced the peak of the harmattan season.

Portuphy stressed the importance of drivers being vigilant and adopting safe driving practices during this period. He emphasized that the visibility is expected to decrease significantly, reaching as low as 700 meters in the coming weeks.

During mornings with fog, visibility can be severely impaired, making it crucial for drivers to use fog lights and reduce their speed to enhance maneuverability and avoid obstacles.

Frederick Cudjoe, a Senior Meteorologist, also advised Ghanaians to take necessary precautions to prevent accidents during the harmattan season.

He recommended that motorists use fog lights when visibility is poor, especially in the early morning and at dawn. Additionally, he urged people going to farms to take precautions against potential fire outbreaks.

Cudjoe further highlighted the presence of particles in the atmosphere during this season and suggested wearing nose masks to reduce the inhalation of airborne particles.

He explained that the dry continental wind from the Sahara and Sahel regions would continue to influence the weather conditions in Ghana throughout December.

The dust conditions are expected to be accompanied by winds originating from the northern part of the continent, affecting the country for the entire month.
