The Turkish football authorities halted all league activities after an alarming incident occurred during a top-flight game on Monday.

Halil Umut Meler, a referee, was punchedby Faruk Koca, the president of MKE Ankaragucu, who rushed onto the field following his team’s concession of a late equalizer in a 1-1 Super Lig draw with Caykur Rizespor.

Mehmet Buyukeksi, chairman of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), announced the suspension of all league matches indefinitely, labeling the attack as a disgrace for Turkish football.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino strongly condemned the incident, stating that violence has no place in sports or society and emphasizing the need for safety for everyone involved in the game.

Meler, a respected referee in Turkey and a FIFA official for international matches, suffered injuries including a minor fracture after being struck multiple times while on the ground.

The chaotic aftermath involved players and club officials amid the distressing scenes.

Faruk Koca, who required hospital treatment, is to undergo detention procedures following his medical care.
