The strike by the 4 Labour Unions in Public universities of Ghana enters its third week with no concrete outcome on payment of conditions of service anytime soon by the government.

The Unions namely the University Association of Ghana (UTAG), Teachers and Educational Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU), Senior Staff Association University of Ghana and Association of University Administrators are demanding a reversal of the government’s decision to pay the 2020 fuel ex-pump allowances instead of the 2021 prices as well as the vehicle maintenance, and off-campus allowances.

Following October 17, industrial action including the Unions including the Federation of University Senior Staff Association joined the strike.

Addressing the media, the General Secretary of UTAG Dr. Asare Annor Asante said the employer has not invited the Unions to discuss terms of payment, as directed by the National Labour Commission.

“After the last meeting with the NLC, we’ve not had any engagement. We would need an invitation before we can do the engagement. Unfortunately, it does not seem as if the employer is in a haste to solve this issue. There is no response or urgency.

According to him, the strike is still in force. He asked government to consider the grievance with all seriousness.”

He added that “We have been writing letters since April and there was no response. It’s been a long time since we have had patience, and so to put a little pressure, we also have to embark on this industrial action which we have done with the three unions.”
