Sam Altman to join Microsoft to lead new AI research team

Microsoft

Sam Altman, previously ousted as OpenAI’s CEO amid a boardroom upheaval, is set to join Microsoft, as confirmed by the tech giant’s CEO, Satya Nadella.

Concurrently, Emmett Shear, former head of Twitch, is slated to step into OpenAI.

Nadella expressed anticipation for Shear’s arrival and unveiled plans for Altman and Greg Brockman, along with their team, to spearhead a fresh advanced AI research unit at Microsoft.

As Microsoft holds a significant investment in OpenAI, Altman will helm this “new group.”

While multiple sources indicated Shear’s likely appointment as OpenAI’s interim CEO, the company remained silent on the matter.

Altman’s dismissal remains veiled in ambiguity. OpenAI cited his alleged lack of transparency with the board, creating hindrances in their duties.

Brockman, in a post, depicted the moment Altman discovered his firing, minutes before the public announcement.

Brockman hinted at a dispute between Altman and the company’s research division, notably led by co-founder Ilya Sutskever, as a central factor.

Sources familiar with the crisis outlined a clash between Altman’s aggressive AI advancement stance and the board’s preference for a more cautious approach.

Altman had advocated for swifter AI product launches and commercialization, though publicly cautioned about AI’s potential risks.
