Neymar to undergo surgery after sustaining ACL knee injury

Neymar

Brazilian soccer superstar Neymar, will be undergoing surgery due to a double injury to his left knee, involving a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus.

The confirmation came from his club, Al-Hilal, following his injury during Brazil’s 2-0 loss to Uruguay on Tuesday.

Neymar sustained the injury while contesting the ball with Uruguay’s Nicolás de la Cruz.

He fell to the ground clutching his knee just before halftime and received medical attention before being stretchered off the field.

Al-Hilal announced that Neymar would undergo surgery and follow a treatment program to be determined later, with a message on social media wishing him a strong recovery.

While the club didn’t specify the expected duration of Neymar’s absence, ACL injuries typically require several months of recovery.

This raises concerns about his participation in the Copa América in June.

Neymar made a high-profile move to Al-Hilal in September, leaving Paris Saint-Germain after spending six seasons in the French capital.

His transfer to PSG in 2017 for €222 million ($243.1 million) was a record at the time and made him the most expensive soccer player ever.

In response to the injury confirmation, Neymar expressed his sadness on social media, acknowledging the challenging times ahead.

Injuries have been a recurring issue in his career, and this marks his second surgery in 2023, following an ankle injury that prematurely ended his final season in Paris.

Despite the setbacks, Neymar achieved the status of Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer in September, surpassing Pelé’s record of 77 international goals after scoring twice against Bolivia.
