Fante Language goes live on Wikipedia

Fante

A fifth Ghanaian language, Fante, now has a page on Wikipedia, joining the other four. It is one of the spoken languages in Ghana.

A major accomplishment for the Fante Wikimedians Community, who began the procedure in March 2022, is this approval.

The language was approved during its incubation stage in the Wikimedia Incubator on Tuesday, 18th April 2023 and the transition was completed on Thursday, 20th April 2023.

With an estimated 2 million speakers, Fante is largely spoken in Ghana’s central and southern regions as well as in few villages in other parts of the country’s western region.

Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, ex-Presidents of Ghana Kwame Nkrumah and John Atta Mills, Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson, and Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang are some noteworthy speakers of the language. Maya Angelou, a well-known poet and author, also picked up the language as an adult while she was visiting Ghana.

Users can now read articles in Fante and access some information that are only available in Fante thanks to Wikipedia’s recognition of the language.

This is an important accomplishment for the Fante language and its speakers because Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia that is hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation and is edited by volunteers from all over the world.

You can visit the Fante Wikipedia via fat.wikipedia.org or by clicking the translation button on another Wikimedia wiki. Its Wikimedians Community benefits from this development, which also helps to promote and preserve the language, culture, and history.
