Akosombo Dam Spillage: NDC expresses disappointment over President Akufo-Addo’s comments in the Volta Region

The NDC has voiced its disappointment regarding President Akufo-Addo's visit to the Volta Region following devastating floods in the area.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has voiced its disappointment regarding President Akufo-Addo’s visit to the Volta Region following devastating floods in the area.

The President’s statements during his visit have faced criticism from the NDC and some citizens who found them to be insensitive.

During his tour of the flood-affected districts, President Akufo-Addo assured the communities that his administration is committed to addressing the flood situation. However, his choice of words has not been well-received by a portion of the public, as they perceived them as lacking sensitivity, given the gravity of the flooding crisis.

In his speech, the President stated, “I came here because Ghanaians are having difficulties and are suffering, and it is my responsibility to try and help. Because, if it is a question of counting who votes for me and who doesn’t vote for me, then I shouldn’t be here because you don’t vote for me. But that is not my concern. And, in any event, one day you will vote for me and my party.”

James Gunu, the Regional Secretary of the Volta NDC, issued a statement expressing the party’s concerns regarding the President’s visit and the impact of his speech on flood victims.

The statement emphasizes the emotional distress caused by the President’s remarks to the victims in North Tongu.

The NDC’s statement also points out the absence of specific assistance and concrete plans in the President’s speech, leaving flood victims without clear information on the support and resources that will be available to them.

The party criticizes the President’s choice of words and tone, which they say exacerbated the emotional turmoil faced by the victims.

The statement stresses that many flood victims were expecting immediate solutions for housing, healthcare, and essential services, which have not been addressed.

Additionally, “many flood victims expected immediate solutions for housing, healthcare, and essential services. These expectations have not been addressed.”

The NDC called for a swift and effective response to assist the flood victims during this challenging time.

They emphasized the need for practical steps to alleviate the suffering of the victims and urged President Nana Akufo-Addo and his administration to promptly address the concerns raised by the flood victims and their advocates.
