Central African bloc Eccas suspends Gabon’s membership over coup

Eccas, the regional bloc for Central Africa, says it has suspended Gabon’s membership in response to the coup last week.

The coup leader, Gen. Brice Oligui Nguema, was sworn in as interim president earlier on Monday.

As soon as Ali Bongo’s third term as president was officially proclaimed, he seized control. He has not specified when the nation will once again be governed by civilians.

There may have been a few moments of introspection as leaders from central Africa gathered around the table and decided to suspend Gabon due to the coup.

Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who was the meeting’s host, declared that the nearby country of Gabon posed a threat to regional stability, security, and peace.

The president of Equatorial Guinea is now 81 and has been in power since 1979.

His family, like Ali Bongo’s in Gabon, has been charged with widespread resource theft and severe opposition repression.

He may not be the only African leader who has held onto power for a very long time and gets nervous when someone mentions the word “coup”.
