Simone Biles wins record eighth US all-around title

Simone Biles broke a record that had stood for 90 years, by winning the all-around title for the eighth time at the US Gymnastics Championships.

Her victory comes less than a month after the four-time Olympic champion made a successful comeback to the sport after taking a two-year break to focus on her mental health.

Shilese Jones finished in second place, 3.9 points behind the 26-year-old, with an overall score of 118.450, after receiving a score of 15.400, for her floor routine.

Biles moves ahead of Alfred Jochim, who claimed his seventh US title in 1933.

She was the only contestant to complete the two competition days in San Jose with two scores of 15 or higher after seizing the event with a 15.700 on the vault on Friday.

In 2013 Biles first won the US all-around title, and in 2021 she tied Jochim’s mark.

After withdrawing from five of her six finals at the delayed Tokyo Olympics, she decided to take a break from gymnastics.

Later, she revealed that she had been suffering from “the twisties,” a type of mental block that can cause gymnasts to lose their sense of space in the air.

Biles, who did manage to win a bronze medal on the balance beam and a team silver in Tokyo, has not yet stated whether she plans to compete at the Olympics in Paris the following year.

However, she is anticipated to compete in the World Championships, which will be held in Antwerp from 30 September to 8 October. There, she will have the opportunity to add to her collection of 25 world medals, including 19 golds.
