Zoom rejects claims of training AI on calls without consent

Zoom has updated its terms of service in response to criticism that it trained its artificial intelligence (AI) models on customer calls.

The company emphasized in a blog post that audio, video, and chats were not used for AI without consent.

Users became concerned about AI training after discovering changes to the company’s terms of service in March, prompting the video calling app to take action.

The company claimed the adjustments were made to increase transparency.

In June, Zoom introduced new AI-powered features, one of which allows users to summarize meetings without recording the entire event. A free trial was available for the features.

But some industry experts cautioned that the terms of service’s original wording might have given Zoom access to more user information than necessary, including information from customer calls.

Before the terms of service were updated, data protection expert Robert Bateman said: “The terms appeared to give the service provider a lot of freedom to use data generated by its users for many different purposes.”

While the risks that might occur are uncertain, he stated that “alarm bells should ring when you encounter broad contractual provisions like these”.

Zoom updated its terms late on Monday, adding the clause “Zoom will not use audio, video or chat customer content to train our artificial intelligence models without your consent”.
