A recycling and compost plant has been put into operation at Aboaonidua, close to Wiawso in the Wiawso Municipality of the Western North Region.
The Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECOP), is a subsidiary of the Jospong Group which was commissioned in collaboration with the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR).
The project, according to Compost and Recycling Plant, is a fulfilment of a commitment made by the President and the combined efforts of numerous stakeholders who have supported the initiative from the beginning.
At the commissioning, Mr Michael Padi Tuwor, Managing Director, Accra said, ” Waste management challenge is not unique to our region or country, but it’s a global issue that demands a comprehensive approach; and with this facility, we are taking a significant step forward tackling the problem,”
He added that waste would no longer be collected randomly but would instead be sorted, and organic waste would be handled to produce compost for farming areas, outlining the facility’s primary goal as creating value and making waste useful.
That, he said, would provide beneficial materials for agricultural use while also promoting environmental sustainability.
Mr Tuwor urged the benevolent communities to actively take part in separating plastic waste from other types of rubbish.
“This facility is not just a symbol of progress, it’s a reflection of Ghana’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. By adopting environmentally sustainable practices, which will contribute to the global agenda of creating a better world for everyone.”
Among the advantages of the factory, Mr Tuwor listed the creation of employment possibilities, acting as a recycling centre, money generation, a centre for student learning, and a decrease in indiscriminate dumping.
Ebusuapayin Nana Yaw Agyemang Badu thanked the President for establishing the Western North Region on behalf of the Paramount Chief of Wiawso.
