Ghana Has Zero Equity Interest In AngloGold Ashanti – Sam Jonah

A States Man, Sir Sam Jonah has revealed that Ghana currently doesn’t have any percentage in equity interest in AngloGold Ashanti.

He says, by law, the government has a 10 per cent interest in all mines in the country, it sold its shares in AngloGold Ashanti.

Speaking to the media, Mr Jonah called for a deliberate action to help Ghanaians own shares in businesses in the country.

He asserts that the economy have an insignificant contributions from the mining sector.

“The economy has very little local ownership so if you take the mines, the Ghana government has by law has 10 per cent interest in all the mines but beyond the Ghana government, there is no Ghanaian who has two per cent in any of the mines in Ghana,” He said.

He further notes that before the merger between Ashanti Gold and AngloGold Ashanti government had 55 per cent interest but at some point in time, the government sold their interest from 55 per cent to 25 per cent in 1994.

He explains that the government of Ghana became a 25 per cent and not a 55 per cent shareholder, adding that currently doesn’t have 1 per cent equity interest in AngloGold Ashanti

“Ghana governement has zero per cent equity in AngloGold Ashanti. The government had 10 per cent in the mines at Obuasi but as the company merged it has zero per cent shares in AngloGold Ashanti,” He mentioned.
