Nigeria’s secret police, DSS files charges against suspended bank governor

Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) has claimed that it has filed charges in court against the country’s suspended Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, following an earlier High Court order to charge him or release him within seven days.

He was suspended earlier in June, not long after President Bola Tinubu took office. The next day, the bank’s governor was taken into police custody.

In a statement, the DSS did not provide specifics regarding the charges brought against Mr. Emefiele but did state that he had been detained due to  “suspected fresh criminal infractions/information, one of which forms the basis for his current prosecution”.

According to the Reuters news agency, documents submitted by government attorneys indicate that one of the charges against him is misappropriation of funds.

No date has been set for Mr. Emefiele’s court appearance, but he will remain in custody until then.

He had ordered for his release on June 20 and claimed there was no justification for his continuous detention.

Investors welcomed the president’s decision to end the governor’s policy of multiple foreign exchange rates and currency restrictions following his suspension.
