NDC accuses NIA of aiding EC to rig 2024 election

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the National Identification Authority (NIA) of collaborating with the Electoral Commission (EC) to manipulate the 2024 general election through data suppression.

The allegations stem from the EC’s decision to use the Ghana Card as the sole document for voter registration in the upcoming election. The NDC claims that the NIA is impeding the registration of these cards in certain regions by closing many NIA offices.

In an interview with Citi News in Accra, Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, revealed that the NIA is charging GHS280 for premium express service in specific regions. This contradicts the notion that the Ghana Card is a public document accessible to all Ghanaians.

Gbande criticized the NIA for profiting from the registration process while many citizens struggle to afford basic necessities like food.

Gbande asserted that the NIA’s actions are aimed at preventing Ghanaians from obtaining the Ghana Card rather than facilitating widespread registration.

He criticized the commercialization of a document that should be considered a public service, emphasizing that the lack of accessibility and affordability undermine its status as a public document.

In summary, the NDC accuses the NIA of collaborating with the EC to suppress data and manipulate the 2024 general election.

They claim that the closure of NIA offices in certain regions, coupled with the premium express service charges, hinders citizens’ access to the Ghana Card, thereby undermining the transparency and inclusivity of the electoral process.
