Sammy Gyamfi, the Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has made a startling revelation, accusing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of attempting to bribe MP-elect James Gyakye Quayson of Assin North not to contest the by-election.

In a Facebook post on July 3, Gyamfi claimed that after the NPP failed to bribe Gyakye Quayson, certain party members threatened to imprison him if he were to be re-elected.

Gyamfi praised Gyakye Quayson for his unwavering commitment and dedication to his constituents, stating that despite facing various challenges, the MP-elect remained steadfast in his determination to fight for justice. He described Gyakye Quayson as calm, confident, humble, and fearless, attributing their victory to his personal conviction and determination.

Gyakye Quayson of the NDC successfully won the by-election for the Assin North constituency, securing 57.56 percent of the total votes cast. He received 17,245 votes, defeating Charles Opoku of the NPP, who garnered 42.15 percent, and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), who received a mere 0.29 percent.

The Assin North seat became vacant after the Supreme Court ordered Parliament to remove Gyakye Quayson’s name from its records. The court ruled that he was not eligible to contest the 2020 parliamentary election in the Assin North Constituency due to filing his nomination forms on October 9, 2020, without meeting the necessary qualifications.
