Three Daboase SHS students drown after sneaking out to swim in overflowing river

In a devastating incident, three first-year technical students from Daboase Senior High Technical School met a tragic end after venturing to swim in the perilously flooded River Subri.

The heart-wrenching event unfolded on Saturday, June 24, when a group of seven students reportedly sneaked out of the school premises to indulge in what proved to be a fatal swimming expedition.

Despite being boarders, the students managed to evade the notice of both the school authorities and their housemaster, leaving their dormitory undetected.

Regrettably, the consequences of their actions were dire. Two bodies have been recovered from the river and are presently held in the morgue at Effia-Nkwanta Teaching Hospital, while efforts persist to locate the third missing student.

The Western Region and its surrounding areas have been experiencing heavy rainfall, resulting in rivers overflowing their banks and causing displacement in numerous communities.

While these students, who were not residents of Daboase Township, intended to bathe and wash clothes in the river, they underestimated the force of the strong currents caused by the flooding, leading to their tragic loss.

Although four of their companions bravely attempted to rescue them, their valiant efforts were in vain. However, a rescue team assembled by the District Security Council, headed by District Chief Executive Mr. Emmanuel Boakye, is tirelessly searching for the missing student.

Mr. Boakye, expressing his sorrow over the incident, emphasized that it was one of the many severe consequences of the incessant rainfall that has persisted since Wednesday. He remarked, “As a result of the rains, many people are now homeless.

While inspecting the affected communities, we were informed by the police about the tragic incident involving the students.” Providing further information about the victims, Mr. Boakye mentioned that they hailed from Inchaban in the Shama District, Amanful in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, and Agona in the Ahanta West Municipality.

The school authorities and local assembly have duly informed the parents of the victims, extending their support during this difficult period.

Taking the opportunity, the DCE advised students, particularly those from other parts of the country, to refrain from venturing into rivers, especially given the perilous conditions prevailing at present.
