NPP: Bawumia exploiting govt resources, personnel for his campaign – Alan’s camp

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is exploiting government resources and staff, according to Yaw Buaben Asamoa, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications director and spokesman for Alan Kyerematen’s campaign.

In the race to lead the NPP into the 2024 general elections, Dr. Bawumia is ahead of the former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen and MP for Assin Central Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, according to a survey of NPP delegates by Global InfoAnalytics and Accra-based Citi TV/Citi FM.

Dr. Bawumia is in the lead with 34.8% of the vote, followed by Kyerematen with 27.9% and Kennedy Agyapong with 12.5%, according to the poll. Less than 1% of the votes were cast for the other contenders, while 8.9% did not declare their vote, and 15.10% were unsure.

However, in a run-off, Alan Kyeremanten is ahead of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, according to the poll, 38% to 37% of the vote.

On Thursday, June 15, 2023, Mr. Asamoah was speaking during an interview on Citi FM in Accra.

“Anyone who claims the vice president is not running for office is not being truthful with you. He sends out government appointees to distribute rewards. They are the ones being threatened with the consequences. There are people to whom various things are being promised.

“Teams of government appointees and party leaders are constantly and frequently working on his behalf as they travel the nation. Therefore, it is not about him; instead, he is actively campaigning across the nation with the help of government workers in an effort to win over delegates”, he said.

“All this is part of the impacts that you see in the polling. The people feel that if I am asked, it will be safer for me to say it that way rather than say it the other way. So there are things happening on the ground,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dr Bawumia will file his nomination forms to contest the NPP Presidential Primaries in Accra today, Friday, June 16, 2023.

Mr Buaben said he was confident Mr Kyerematen will win the primaries and subsequently become Ghana’s next president.

“I am confident that Alan will win this primary and cross on to lead Ghanaians. Delegates are aware about sentiments in the country and know who they want to lead them. We know what is happening on the ground, he is doing appreciably well,” he added.
