The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has issued a strong advisory, urging individuals to avoid traversing floodwaters in their quest to reach their destinations.
This cautionary message comes in the aftermath of a tragic incident where four bodies were recovered from floodwaters in various towns within the Ashanti Region, following a heavy downpour on Wednesday.
Frank Duodu, the Ashanti Regional Director of NADMO, stressed the importance of not jeopardizing one’s life during adverse weather conditions. He emphasized the significance of heeding the warnings issued by the Ghana Meteorological Agency, particularly during the rainy season, and acting accordingly. Mr. Duodu urged the public to refrain from venturing into flood-prone areas if it is not necessary.
In addition to this advice, Mr. Duodu suggested seeking shelter on higher ground whenever rainfall occurs. By choosing elevated locations to take refuge during rainy periods, individuals can minimize their exposure to potential dangers associated with flooding. Mr. Duodu acknowledged that while certain areas may become flooded, it is crucial for people not to make the decision to traverse through the floodwaters, as doing so significantly increases the risks involved.
Tragically, on Wednesday, June 21st, four individuals lost their lives in Atafoa, Sepaase, and Tafo, all situated in the Ashanti Region. Furthermore, in a heartbreaking turn of events, the brother of one of the victims from the Atafoa incident lost his life as well. He had dived into the river in an attempt to locate his deceased sibling on Thursday, June 22nd.
The series of unfortunate events serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers posed by flooding and the importance of heeding precautionary measures. NADMO and other relevant agencies are working diligently to raise awareness about the risks associated with floodwaters and the need for the public to prioritize their safety during adverse weather conditions.
