NADMO Begins Sensitisating Public On Adhering To Precautionary Measures During Rainy Season

The National Disaster Management Organisation, NADMO, is advising the public to adhere to safety precautions both in the public space and at home as the rains set in.

In an interview on Spice 91.9 FM, the Human Resource person at NADMO STMA, Madam Emma Adu, says the organization has already begun a sensitization exercise in schools, and other public places to conscientise people on possible disasters which come with the season.

She warned against flash flooding, as predicted by the Ghana Meteorological Service, and as such people should brace themselves for more rains in the coming months.

“Reports from Meteo indicate that from May to July, we are going to experience flash rains which cause flash flooding, and that’s why NADMO STMA is embarking on this education. We have been to both the primary and secondary to sensitize them towards the rainfall.

People sometimes take the predictions of the Meteo as a joke. We should take the predictions seriously. Of late, the rains have been torrential even though it does last long,” Emma Adu said.

For his part, the head of operations at the Organisation, Joseph Hinson identified Essaman, Nkotompo, Diabene, and Agric NewSite as flood-prone areas.

” Essaman-Nkotompo, Agric NewSite, Diabene, and Kansawordo are some of the flash points prone to flooding. We are doing our best to resolve this problem.

There is always a backflow of rainwater when it rains heavily.

For Agric Newsite, their problem is peculiar due to the previous settlement plan. The buffers we set for the drains have encroached, and the distilling of the drainages is impossible,” He mentioned.

He mentioned that encroachment on the drainage buffers is a major challenge they face, during the distilling of drainage systems.

The public is meanwhile entreated to turn off all electrical appliances when leaving their homes and to store enough food during this rainy season.

” It is the duty of NADMO to ensure people do not get overwhelmed during rainy seasons. As the rains set in, fire can also set in. Before we leave our homes or workplaces, we must be sure to switch off all electrical appliances. Faulty wires must also be fixed to avoid any casualties.

We should also ensure to keep our surroundings clean and be sure to save enough food at all times,” Emma Adu added.
