Renowned Author, Prof. Ama Ata Aidoo To Be Given State Burial

The family of the late Professor Ama Ata Aidoo has formally informed President Akuffo Addo of her demise.

Ama Ata Aidoo is one of Ghana’s finest playwrights who died at the age of 81. She is notable for being the author of, “The Dilemma of a Ghost”, “Our Sister Killjoy” and “Changes”.

Ata Aidoo, a University Professor, received numerous literary honours for her books, plays, and poetry, including the 1992 Commonwealth Writers Prize for Changes, a love story about a statistician who marries multiple people after divorcing her first spouse.

She objected to what she called a “Western perception that the African female is a downtrodden wretch.” She also held the position of Education Minister in the early 1980s, but she left after failing to make education free.

The late Prof. Ama Ata Aidoo will be laid to rest on July 13 according to information provided to the President by a delegation from her family led by Ebusuapayin Kwabena Essandoh. The next day, she would be buried in her hometown.

Professor Ama Ata Aidoo’s state-sponsored funeral was announced by President Akufo-Addo. He explained that the state was thanking her for her service in this way.
