A deadly fire broke out in a school dormitory in Guyana, allegedly started by a student who was upset about her confiscated mobile phone.

The blaze occurred in the early hours of Monday, resulting in the deaths of 19 individuals, mostly female students.

The dormitory had locked doors and covered windows, trapping the victims.

The teenage suspect, who is currently hospitalized with burns, has reportedly confessed to starting the fire.

Authorities are considering whether to press charges against her.

The fire was started in the bathroom area and rapidly spread throughout the wooden building, which housed 57 students.

Survivors described being awakened by screams in the middle of the night.

The dorm administrator, who tragically lost her five-year-old son in the fire, was unable to find the keys to unlock the door due to panic.

Firefighters had difficulty containing the fire initially due to adverse weather conditions.

Alongside the victims who lost their lives, several others were injured in the incident, most of whom were indigenous girls.
