The Educational Director of the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, Madam Sally Nelly Coleman has called for the abolishment of Tax on Sanitory pads to make it affordable for young women and reduce teenage Pregnancy.
According to her some young girls have been taken advantage of by some unscrupulous men in society due to the fact that they cannot afford Sanitory Pad.
Some parents are able to afford it while others find it difficult to do therefore a policy to make it free and accessible to everyone will be the way to go.
“I am advocating for total abolishment of any tax on Sanitary Pads to make it affordable for parents to buy or probably making it free. For me I can buy but for some parent who cannot afford it government should make it free for them”.
She made this known in a stakeholders gathering that delebrated on support for the vulnerable in society which also forms part of thematic areas of the Sekondi Takoradi City Project Project expected to be executed within a 3year period in collaboration with City of Palemo.
Speaking about Truancy of some students in the basic schools, he attributed the cause to economic challenges where some students will have to undertake menial jobs for their survival, however he acknowledge that the number of boys engaged in these kind of jobs outways that of the girls.
“For truancy the boys are more than the girls, they go at see and do other menial jobs when they are suppose to be in the classroom, there are attitudinal issues that are affecting academic performance therefore there is the need to change such trajectory.
She finally accused the Ghana Police Service of sometimes meddling in cases brought to them which frustrate the process of justice.
The education director, Madam Sally Nelly Coleman finally called on the Assemblies to enact bye laws to deal with such insitutional failures.
