Taxis, Not Allowed on SHS campuses – W/R Education Director cautions
The Western Regional Director of Education, Mrs Felicia Agyeibea Okai has cautioned that taxis amongst other commercial vehicles are not allowed on the campuses of Senior High Schools.
“GES we don’t allow taxis into our schools. I’m surprised at this development. Every student alight at the gate of the school. No taxi should be parading in our schools whether they have stickers or tags,” she started.
Her comment comes on the back of a misunderstanding between management of Ahantaman Girls High School and Taxi drivers at Ketan.
Speaking in an interview with Spice FM, Madam Agyeibea Okai said such practices by the drivers should not be encouraged.
She said, “it is against the rules of GES to allow public transport to throng campuses of Senior High Schools, especially with the insurgency of Covid -19 and terrorism.”
Authorities of the school proposed to get the driver’s tags and stickers as a form of identification cards and to ensure the safety of the students, especially in the era of terrorism, after a meeting with security agencies.
However, the drivers claim that management is charging each driver an amount of 20 cedis for a sticker, which would enable drivers’ entry into the campus.
They added again that not all the drivers who convey students to the school belong to the Ketan Taxi Rank, thus the school should tighten security rather than extort money from drivers.
Reacting to the claims, the Headmistress of Ahantaman Girls Senior High School, Ernestina Kamkam, said, the leaders of the drivers misconstrued the communication thus creating tension between the two parties.
” They agreed to pay 20 cedis for the sticker and the tag for the easy identification. The executives of the drivers did not explain things well to their members, and that has brought about the brouhaha,” she said.
She revealed that there was going to be a meeting between school management and the drivers to straighten matters.
