PURC To Engage Stakeholders over Possible Tariff Adjustment

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission, PURC, will on Monday, May 16, engage members of the Public for input on possible upward adjustment of utility tariffs. The open forum which will include utility service providers such as the Electricity Company of Ghana, ECG, Ghana Grid Company, GRIDCO and NEDCO will be an opportunity for the service providers to make their proposals known to the public.

Some utility service providers have been calling for increase in tariffs.

The ECG wants 148 percent upward adjustment whereas GRIDCO wants 37 percent increase.

Meanwhile, residents in the Sekondi – Takoradi have shared their thoughts on the possible tariff adjustment.

” I do not agree with the increment because as at now salaries has not been increased as cost of living is also on the rise, a resident said.

Mr Koomson, a government worker touted likewise disagrees with the increase of tariff prices because of economic hardships.

“I totally disagree with the increment in both electricity and water tariffs, because there’s enough hardship in the system. The increment will take the economic situations higher where citizens are going to be burdened.

I think, they should wait for the appropriate time, maybe when the economy is good for everyone before such an increment can be enrolled,” he noted.
