It’s Time To Crack The Whip On Illegal Miners – Gov’t Told

A Member of the New Patriotic Party Communication Team in the Western Region, Rex John Fiaa, says, it’s about time, authorities crack the whip on perpetrators who engage in illegal mining.

According to him, irresponsible mining by some miners needs to be checked and apportioned as the maximum punishment.

Mr Fiaa called on Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to sit up and not allow these miners to degrade the environment.

He says it will be disappointing if the ‘said’ Akonta Mining is not sanctioned for carrying out its activities in the Tano Nimere Forest.

“After investigations are finalised and the Akonta Mining Company is found culpable, the whip should be cracked.

If truly they were given the license to mine but they flouted, they need to be punished.

Chairman Wontumi and his operations should not be allowed to deplete the forest and water bodies in the Samreboi Community or even the country as a whole.

As a party in government, we have to make sure that the mandate given to us by Ghanaians to protect the nature reserves is not left in the hands of some people.

MMDAs including Regional ministers who find themselves in affected regions, communities should sit up,”
