WAPCo Urged to Transform Host Communities into Modern Communities

The West African Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) at Aboadze in the Shama District of the Western Region, has been urged to transform host communities within the Shama Township.

 Speaking at WAPCo’s 10th Anniversary of commercial operations in Ghana, Mr Kwabena Okyere Darko – Mensah charged the management of WAPCo as part of its Social Corporate Responsibility (CSR) to help make the lives of indigenes better and more comfortable.

“It is heartwarming to know that, the WAPCo is committed to providing a socio-economic impact to stakeholders and engages in corporate social investment through partnerships and ensure development project creating a sustainable livelihood for the people.

In fact, I want to see your communities develop into modern communities not villages. Don’t keep them in villages. Don’t keep them in poverty. Let them live above poverty.” he stated.

 Mr Darko Mensah recounted the economic importance of the Western Region to the country’s development, saying it had contributed 51 per cent of Ghana’s cocoa, 85 per cent of coconut, 65 per cent of gold, 100 per cent of manganese and 100 per cent of Ghana’s Oil and Gas.

Meanwhile, the Company has supported brilliant but needy students to further their education up to the tertiary level through the enrolment of some educational programs in five (5) communities in the Shama District.

“WAPCo has contributed to the development of its 5 host communities in the Shama District and embarking on some educational projects in the communities of Shama, Lower Inchaban, Abuesi, Dwomo and Aboadze.

He commended the company for supporting a total of 503 students through the livelihood program in scholarships and community youth enterprises.

However, some of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the company for the support and called for more assistance to less privileged people in the communities.

Mr Gregory Germani, the Managing Director of WAPCo, said the company will continue to support the local communities and promote education, health and development.

“We have done a lot. Over 500 graduates have benefitted from the scholarship we’ve done. We have been here, we will continue to be here to support the local communities. We hope to promote education, providing health care facilities,“ He remarked.
