Veteran Administration Ghana Launches Poppy Day

Poppy Day

The Veteran Administration Ghana (VAG) has launched this year’s Poppy Day with the military band and concert to raise funds for the rehabilitation of the veteran’s clinic.

Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia said, the government has the welfare of the veterans at heart, and has over the years supported VAG’s project.

Vice President commended the new Board of VAG for leveraging technology to minimise the delays in the processing of pensions and ensuring the registration of some VAG lands.

He also appealed to the public to patronise the poppy, wear it and donate to the veterans to enable them to undertake projects.

In Ghana, Remembrance Day is held on November 11 annually to honor or remember servicemen who died fighting.

He pledges government commitment to assist the veterans as they have made sacrifices which have contributed to national development.

Poppy Day

The remembrance poppies have become the defining symbol of reverence for the millions of soldiers who lost their lives in conflict. In the present day the ‘poppy appeal’, organized by The Royal British Legion, takes place in the weeks leading up to Remembrance Sunday, which occurs on the Sunday nearest to Armistice Day.

The poppy appeal raises money for those who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces and have subsequently been affected physically, mentally, or economically by war.

The history of the poppy as a symbol of respect for the war dead is now almost one hundred years old. Since the appeal’s inception in 1921, the poppy has become an international symbol of remembrance for those who have given their lives defending their respective countries.
