Parents Urged to Be Responsible Towards Their Wards

Western Regional Director at the Department of Gender under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Madam Maribel Akuorkor Okine, has implored parents to be responsible in the upbringing of children.

She made the call in an interview with Spice FM, Adzekye Mu Nsem as Ghana joins the rest of the world to mark International Human Rights Day.

Madam Okine reckoned that there were rights that come with responsibilities as enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana.

She mentioned that parents should send their children to school to help shape them to become role models to other children, adding that any form of violence against children should be eschewed.

“Parents should know that the children’s welfare is being catered for. The child has a right to be educated which would propel her to become a better person in society. In as much as, children are to help their parents with certain chores at home, they must not be used anyhow which could affect them”, she emphasized.

She, however, entreated parents to give their wards the maximum support both in school and at home and added that the children need both parents to help shape their lives as they grow up.

Madam Okine admonished parents to make time out of their busy activities to familiarize themselves with their wards.

She explained that children at some point in their growth need parental guidance to make some decisions in life.

“Parents of late go after money at the blind side of catering for their wards. Children need the mother, father to help them in their upbringing.” She added.

The United Nations set aside I6 day’s activism against Gender-Based violence which included, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, World AIDS Day, International Day of Persons with Disabilities, International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development and The Montreal Massacre.

The 16 days activism is ended with the commemoration of Human Rights Day, themed, “Reducing Inequalities and Advancing Human Rights.”
