Motorbike Offences In W/R: 138 Arrested, 59 For Court, 22 Convicted To A Fine Of GHc 5,280

As part of efforts to bring perpetrators of the recent robbery attacks to book and to provide optimum security to ensure public safety in the Western Region, the Western Regional Motor Transport and Traffic Division (RMTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested and impounded 138 motorbikes and fifthteen (15) tricycles so far in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis for various motor offences.

So far, 18 have been released after being found innocent while fifty-nine (59) processed for court with twenty-two (22) out of the 59 convicted to a total fine of five-thousand, two-hundred and eighty Ghana Cedis (GHc 5,280).

Personnel were deployed to eight (8) intersections, namely Kwame Nkrumah Roundabout, Pipeano, Paa Grant Roundabout, Effiakuma No. 9, Secko Junction, Kansaworado and Kwesimintsim under the command of Senior Police Officer (SPOs).

DSP Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, Western Regional Head of Public Affairs Unit in an interview with Spice News explained that the operation was due to the frequent motor accidents and the recent criminal activities involving motorbike users within the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis and the region at large.

She added that personnel were drawn from the Regional MTTD, Regional Operations, Sekondi Division, Takoradi Division and the Regional Rapid Deployment Forces (RDF) under the supervision of the Takoradi Divisional Commander.

She divulged that on 14/04/21 at 0600 hours, the exercise was carried out by the Western Regional Police Command within the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis and ended successfully at 1100 hours without any incident while similar exercises were conducted on 12th and 13th April, 2021.

DSP Adiku narrated that personnel were briefed to approach the exercise with a high sense of professionalism and comportment prior to the exercise adding, “they were asked to stop and search any motorcycle and look out for implements adapted to commit crime during the operation.”
