STMA and EKMA Register 647 Voters in 1-day Re-opening of Voters Registration Exercise

The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) and Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly (EKMA) in the Western Region have recorded a total 415 and 232 registrants respectively in the 1-day re-opening of the voters registration exercise.

Meanwhile, 232 voters who came there could not have the opportunity to register within the stipulated time of 0700 hours and 1800 hours for the exercise and were given special numbers to participate in the exercise the next day due to long queues.

The exercise was undertaken in two separate Registration Centers which were all set up together at the premises of the Electoral Commission in Takoradi.

The Spice News Team gathered that as at 5:20 am, 182 voters had been registered with 51 awaiting in a queue to be registered at the Takoradi District Registration Center. 

The Team also observed that all COVID-19 safety protocols such as Veronica buckets, soap and tissue papers for hand washing and sanitizers were adequately provided with a social distancing protocol in place and applicants wearing nose mask. 

Madam Efe Wilson, District Officer of the Electoral Commission for the Takoradi District indicated that the registration process started with manual registration around 0400 hours until they were told to switch to online registration.

She said that the process was running effectively adding, “Biometric Machines were in use with the guarantor system operating effectively. People were taken through the standard identification system while security presence was available at the venue.”

Below is the breakdown for the exercise in the two District; Manual Registration/offline – 163, Online Registration – 35 with 70 scheduled for the next day for the Takoradi District Center while the Effia-Kwesimintsim District Center had Manual Registration/offline – 235 and Online Registration – 42 with 162 scheduled for the next day.

The EC re-opened the Voters Register for eligible voters who could not take part in the recent registration exercise to have the opportunity to register so as to enable them vote in the December 7 polls.

The registration exercise took place on Thursday, October 01, 2020 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at all District Offices of the Commission across the country. 

All eligible applicants went to the Registration Centres with either their Ghana Card or Ghana Passport while applicants who did not have any of the above went with two registered voters to act as guarantors.
