Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality Records An Increase In Rabies Cases


Rabies, an acute viral disease of the nervous system of warm-blooded animals usually transmitted by the bite of an infected animal can sometimes be fatal if the virus reaches the brain.
This has alerted health professionals globally to always come up with innovative ways to fight the disease.
The Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality is no exception in this quest.
As the infection rate goes up annually, efforts have also been intensified to overcome arising challenges in the municipality.
In 2017, over 200,000 Ghana cedis was spent in dealing with rabies in the Tarkwa Nsuaem municipality alone.
This was after about 175 people, 300 sheep and goats and 1,500 poultry birds were infected by the disease as a result of dog bite.
According to the Municipal veterinary officer, Dr. Simon Gbene, He provides a breakdown of the statistics available in respect to dealing with issues pertaining to rabies infection.
Addressing how the municipality plans to reduce the recorded cases of rabies, Dr Simon Gbene confirmed his outfit will be embarking on a door to door vaccination exercise.
He explained that this forms part of a three year plan to drastically reduce the reported and recorded cases of rabies.
