Burna Boy, a Grammy-winning Nigerian recording artist, has become the first-ever international Afrobeats artist to earn the No. 1 spot on the official weekly UK album chart, published on September 1.

The accomplishment is for Burna’s most recent album, “I Told Them,” his fourth to chart in the UK and the follow-up to his No. 2 album from 2022, “Love, Damini”.

“I’m absolutely thrilled and humbled by the incredible support and love that ‘I Told Them…’ has received from fans in the UK,” Burna Boy told the media in a statement provided by his publicist.

“This album is very close to my heart, and to see it reach the number one spot is a testament to the power of music and the unbreakable connection I have with my fans,” he added. “Thank you to everyone who made this possible.”

For Burna Boy, 32, whose real name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, this summer has been historically significant. He made history as the first African artist to perform in front of a packed stadium in the UK (London Stadium) in June, and he repeated the feat in the US (Citi Field in New York) in July. At the 2023 BET Awards, he won Best International Act for the third time.

On September 23, the performer will take his live performance to Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium in South Africa.
