Floods In The Western Region Result in 2 Fatalities And 2,300 Injuries

The National Disaster Management Organisation, NADMO has disclosed that two persons died while Two Thousand and Three Hundred people were affected by floods which hit parts of the Western Region.

The figures recorded are for that of June 2023.

According to NADMO, the deaths occurred at Tarkwa and Ayiem in the Mpohor Municipalities, and about 410 of those affected reside on the slit at Nzulezo in the Jomoro Municipality.

The organisation further revealed that large areas of farmlands and properties have also been destroyed by floods in communities in Wassa East, Jomoro, Ahanta West, Nzema East and Tarkwa -Nsueam.

Residents as well as farmers in Dominase, Kaku Suazo, Gwira Eshiem, Bamianko and Ainyinase are calling on the government to repair access to roads destroyed by floods.

Residents of Gwira Eshiem had to contend with high tides when the River Ankobra exceeded its banks, flooded homes, and prevented residents from leaving their rooms.

According to Abdul Ganiyu Mohammed, the Western Regional NADMO Coordinator, the recent torrential rain across the region has had an impact on socioeconomic operations, and victims are in need of relief supplies.

He gave a warning that excessive moisture content in the clouds was still being reported in meteorological reports.

Mr Mohammed noted that a developer had built a bridge across the River Whin to gain access to his site and blamed some of the floods on haphazard and illegal development along streams.

He said, “We receive reports from Meteo every three days from the national level and if we don’t take care, we’ll be experiencing more natural disasters in the region.”
