Lessen Pain Of Debt Exchange Program On Bondholders -Government Told

The much talked about Debt Exchange Program introduced by the government has received a lot of backlash from the general public due to its impact on bondholders, pensioners and amongst others.

The Government has taken the decision to extend the Expiration Date of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme from Monday, 16th January 2023 to Tuesday, 31st January 2023.

The extension is to allow the government to build consensus while they engage with stakeholders institutions and individual investors.

Emmanuel Amoah Darkwa, an economist said government debt exchange programs come at a great cost to several organizations and individuals, most especially pensioners.

According to him, the government can ameliorate the pain which comes with the domestic exchange by sharing the burden.

By this, government can meet those bearing the brunt of the debt exchange program halfway by implementing a policy that will cut expenditure on insignificant projects.

He was speaking to the media on the impact of the debt exchange program on individual bondholders and pensioners.

The convenor of the pensioner’s bondholders, Mr. Adu Anane-Antwi, said that all the commotion would not have happened if the government had conducted enough consultations on the debt swap program prior to implementing it.
