A zookeeper at a university in Nigeria has tragically lost his life after being attacked by one of the lions he had cared for over nearly a decade.

Olabode Olawuyi, who oversaw the zoo at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), was fatally wounded by a lion while feeding the animals, according to the university’s statement.

Despite efforts from his colleagues, Olawuyi could not be saved, leading to the decision to euthanize the lion involved.

The deceased, a veterinary technologist, had been responsible for the care of the lions since their birth on campus approximately nine years ago.

“We never knew what came over the male lion that it had to attack [him],” said the university’s public relations officer, Abiodun Olarewaju.

The university community has been deeply affected by the incident, with Nigerians on social media sharing graphic images and expressing mourning.

A team from the university has reached out to the family of the deceased to offer condolences.

Prof Adebayo Simeon Bamire, the vice-chancellor, expressed sadness and ordered a thorough investigation into the causes of the incident.

According to Abbas Akinremi, the university students’ union leader, the attack was attributed to “human error” as the zookeeper allegedly forgot to secure the lion’s enclosure after feeding.

He described the incident as unfortunate and paid tribute to Olawuyi as a kind and dedicated individual who provided excellent care to visitors at the zoo.
