KATH doctors consider leaving roles due to housing issues

Doctors

Doctors and other medical personnel at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) are facing a housing crisis due to private developers taking over their current accommodations.

This situation has led to a crucial meeting among the doctors or health workers to address the challenges they are facing.

According to reports, the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council has given them a week’s ultimatum to vacate their residences, which have allegedly been sold to private developers.

Dr. Paa Kwasi Baidoo, the Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Medical Association, expressed concern over the sudden displacement of hospital staff and highlighted an agreement with Manhyia Palace for new accommodations before the land handover. However, this agreement seems to have been ignored.

Dr. Baidoo mentioned that many staff members currently live quite close to the hospital but are now being asked to move due to the alleged sale of the properties.

He emphasized that the outcome of the meeting will determine their next steps, including the possibility of leaving their duties to find new accommodation.

On the other hand, the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council has stated that the relocation is part of a planned effort to move all government workers to a specified enclave of state lands around Danyame and Nhyiaeso, which have been ceded to the Manhyia Palace.

Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei Mensah clarified that new facilities are being constructed for the affected government workers and refuted claims of forceful eviction.

He assured that the relocation aims to improve working conditions by providing better facilities for employees living within the designated area.
